Solid carbide drills (VHM drills) with their outstanding drilling performance are increasingly being used in modern drilling machines for drilling flat steel and section steel. In the diameter range from 8 mm to 18 mm, the solid carbide drills are superior to the carbide drills with indexable insert. The otherwise often used Kennametal KSEM or Hartner Multiplex carbide drills are rarely reground and therefore these drills are up to a diameter of 18 mm more expensive than the solid carbide drills, which can be reground several times. The solid carbide drill consists entirely of heat-resistant and wear-resistant tungsten carbide material and therefore achieves very high feed rates and drilling speeds.
With a 14 mm carbide drill with basic body and cutting insert in length 5 X D, very considerable drilling speeds are achieved when drilling normal structural steel at a speed of approx. 1800 rpm and a feed rate of approx. 6.5 mm / sec. When drilling with a VHM solid carbide drill from Hartner, which consists only of the carbide material, the drilling speed of construction steel can be slightly increased again. With optimum cooling by a suitable coolant and a good material tension, the speed to about 2000 U / min and the feed to 7.5 mm / sec. increase. But even these performance characteristics will certainly be surpassed in carbide drilling in the foreseeable future.
However, the hard metal material is sensitive to shocks and vibrations, therefore, a good material and tool clamping and a stable drilling machine for carbide use condition. The mentioned feed values and speeds for carbide drills and solid carbide drills are practical values, which, however, may vary depending on the drilling machine make. The optimum economic drilling speed results from the tool life (tool costs) and a high speed.
The choice of the optimum feed rates and speeds of a solid carbide drill therefore depends not only on the stability of the drill line, but also on many other factors: the material to be processed, the vibration from the workpiece clamping (if one compares a thick 50 mm steel plate against a thin steel beam profile), the tool cutting Geometry, the material surface (blasted material or material with a scale layer), the quality of the cooling lubrication, the tool coating, the cutting edge, etc. Assuming a high-performance drilling unit, solid carbide drills achieve triple drilling performance with a longer service life compared to HSS drills.
